Asbury Park Mixed-Use Development: Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future

This mixed-use development in the heart of Asbury Park reimagines the former Barry Slott Building into a landmark fusion of history and innovation. Designed by Workshop/APD, the proposal integrates a modern skybox addition atop the neoclassical foundation.

The three-story glass structure, enclosed in vertical louvers, offers both design contrast and functional privacy. The addition houses upscale rental apartments while the ground level introduces a curated culinary experience — all thoughtfully situated within the historic downtown streetscape of New Jersey.

Project Description

Our client, Workshop/APD, sought renderings that would showcase the project’s scale while emphasizing the human-centric design of public spaces and outdoor seating areas. NoTriangle Studio was tasked with recreating the entire area in 3D to illustrate how these spaces interconnect with each other and the surrounding neighborhood.​

Project Challenges

In our project, we encountered several key challenges that required innovative solutions to meet our client’s needs and expectations:

Challenge 1: Visual Integration of Historic and Modern Architecture

Balancing the visual identity of the historic neoclassical base with the bold, modern glass addition was critical. Our renderings needed to harmonize these contrasting design elements, ensuring the building felt cohesive, not disjointed.

Challenge 2: Capturing the Texture and Detail of Original Elements

From fluted columns to arched windows, the original Barry Slott Building had distinctive architectural details. These needed to be faithfully recreated to preserve the building’s character while showing how they interact with the new structure above.

Challenge 3: Contextualizing the Development within a Typical NJ Streetscape

The client wanted viewers to understand how the building would look and feel in its real urban setting. Creating accurate street-level perspectives that showcased the building’s scale and materials alongside adjacent architecture was essential.

To overcome these challenges and deliver compelling marketing visuals, we implemented a number of strategic visualization techniques:

Architectural Layering for Contrast and Harmony:

We crafted architectural renderings that showcased the interplay between old and new materials—juxtaposing textured stone with sleek glass. Strategic lighting and perspective choices highlighted how the vertical louvers echoed the rhythm of the columns below.

Detailed 3D Modeling of Historic Features:

Our team developed high-fidelity 3D models of the building’s neoclassical features to ensure visual accuracy. Every column, window arch, and facade texture was meticulously recreated to match the original design.

Realistic Urban Integration:

We built a detailed 3D context model of the surrounding streetscape to embed the development into a recognizable environment. This gave stakeholders and viewers a realistic understanding of the building’s presence in downtown Asbury Park.
