Asbury Park 2nd Avenue Pavilion Redevelopment on the Boardwalk

The Asbury Park 2nd Avenue Pavilion is the latest addition to a growing series of revitalization efforts across the city’s historic boardwalk district. Designed by Workshop/APD, the project embraces the spirit of Asbury Park’s eclectic seaside charm, blending brick and masonry architecture with vibrant mural-covered walls to create a pavilion that feels both contemporary and connected to local culture.
Once completed, the pavilion will serve as a multi-use retail and hospitality destination, anchored by an open-air courtyard that encourages visitors to gather, dine, explore, and experience the character of the boardwalk in a new way. The design is a continuation of broader efforts to reconnect the east and west sides of Asbury Park through inclusive, high-quality placemaking — as seen in the nearby Transit Hub and Urban Redevelopment Projects.

Project Description
Our client, Workshop/APD, needed marketing imagery that could evoke the vibrant, energetic nature of the Asbury Park Boardwalk while staying true to the project’s architectural sophistication. NoTriangle Studio was brought on to create renderings that could bridge the area’s colorful visual identity with the clean geometry of the pavilion design.
From brick facades to mural textures, and from the courtyard layout to boardwalk-level sightlines, our team was responsible for bringing this site to life in 3D — in a way that feels both grounded and aspirational.

Project Challenges
In our project, we encountered several key challenges that required innovative solutions to meet our client’s needs and expectations:
Challenge 1: Capturing the Boardwalk’s Cultural Energy
The 2nd Avenue Pavilion isn’t just a building — it’s part of a living, breathing environment filled with art, music, and public life. Our renderings needed to reflect that atmosphere without distracting from the architecture.
Challenge 2: Representing Textural Details Accurately
Materials like hand-laid brick, patterned masonry, and mural art required careful attention in texturing and lighting to showcase craftsmanship and artistic intention.
Challenge 3: Emphasizing the Courtyard as a Social Heart
The design centers around an open courtyard. Conveying its scale, openness, and interaction with surrounding retail spaces was key to communicating its role in the user experience.
Project Solutions
To overcome these challenges and deliver compelling marketing visuals, we implemented a number of strategic visualization techniques:
3D Material Accuracy:
We modeled and rendered architectural materials to reflect real-world surface properties, from brick tone to mural reflectivity. This added richness and realism to the final imagery.
Environmental Context & People Integration:
To convey the social vibe of Asbury Park, we added boardwalk-level context, street furniture, signage, and human figures that reflect the city’s laid-back, artistic culture.
Courtyard Storytelling:
We positioned cameras strategically to show the courtyard in use — surrounded by boutique storefronts, shaded areas, and sightlines leading back to the mural walls and boardwalk.
Project Results
Enhanced Design Review: The renderings helped Workshop/APD refine key visual elements, including mural positioning and brick coloration.
Stakeholder Buy-In: City planners and community partners responded positively to the visual presentation, which clearly showed how the pavilion would blend with its surroundings.
